What is Meant by “Reformed”?
When we use the term reformed we refer to those Doctrines that have been upheld during the Protestant reformation.
The first set of fundamental Reformation doctrines are made up of five Latin phrases that emerged during the Reformation and summarize the Reformers’ basic theological beliefs. These are known as the Five Solas:
- Sola Scriptura: “Scripture Alone is the Standard”
- Sola Fide: “Justification by Faith Alone”
- Sola Gratia: “Salvation by Grace Alone”
- Solus Christus: “By Christ’s Work Alone are We Saved”
- Soli Deo Gloria: “For the Glory of God Alone”
The next set of fundamental Reformation doctrines are known as the five points of Calvinism (also known as the Doctrines of Grace):
- Total Depravity (also known as “Total Inability”)
- Unconditional Election
- Limited Atonement (also known as “Particular Redemption”)
- Irresistible Grace
- Perseverance of the Saints
Although the rappers featured on this website hold to the essential Reformation doctrines outlined above (which are the “minimum” requirements to be considered Reformed), there are also a number of differing views in relation to other secondary doctrines, which today, are not essential to being Reformed. Some of these include:
- Amill, Postmill, or Premill position (eschatological views)
- Continuation or Cessation of the Charismatic gifts
- Infant Baptism or Believer’s only Baptism
